The mysterious Frdamane Police ledges are an object of curiosity which leave visitors asking questions that may remain unanswered.
Its challenging rocky barriers are extremely difficult to access and hard to navigate, and are therefore tackled only by a few exceptional climbers. Like most mountains, its two-headed peak was given its name by the locals. According to local legend, shepherds wearing clogs climbed the mountain in search of lost sheep and goats. They use to swear:
"TE FRDAMANE POLICE!" ("THESE DAMNED LEDGES")
Frdaman = damned (SSJK Dictionary of Standard Slovenian Language)
Clogs = footwear with a wooden sole
Clogs with a sole made of beech or birch wood and an upper made of pigskin or woven strips of larch were very popular in the past and for a while the only available type of footwear. People not only wore them in the home, but also in the fields or meadows. Shepherds wore them when taking their herds up to graze higher pastures. Children wore them to travel to school in Kranjska Gora. Those who owned shoes wore them only for special occasions – to attend Mass or to work in the forest.
